One of the famous South Indian breakfast which no one would have missed to taste it. A Smooth and soft dish that glides into your mouth with the smell of ghee and seasoned spices. Here is an excellent and effortless recipe that makes you master the making of Venpongal.


1 cup raw rice/ seeraga samba rice

1/4 cup of yellow moong dal

1 tsp of pepper

1 tsp of cumin seeds

8-10 cashews

Curry leaves

Ghee and cooking oil

Salt as required


Step 1: Heat 2tsp ghee and 3tsp oil in a cooker.

Step 2: Add cashews, curry leaves, peppercorns and cumin seeds and fry in the oil for 2 mins

Step 3: Add 4 cups of water and salt as required.

Step 4: Once it gets to boil, add moong dal and rice and mix it well

Step 5: Cook till you get 5 whistles in medium flame and turn it off.

Step 6: After the pressure is gone, open the cooker and slightly mash it and add little ghee for extra aroma.

Simple and easy Venpongal is ready to be served hot with coconut chutney and sambar.
