Nonbu kanji is a porridge made mainly of rice, lentils, spices and other items. Usually it is prepared during the holy month of Ramadan when muslims fast for 30 days. I am sharing the popular non veg special masala kanji here and the flavours are much like that of a briyani
This kanji has always been a hit amongst my family and friends whoever i had served this till now. Do try it out and relish this masala kanji in this blessed month of Ramadan.
1/2 cup kanji rice (broken rice)
1 tablespoon moong dal(paasi paruppu)
1 small onion
1 small tomato
2 green chillies
3-4 garlic pots
few fenugreek seeds(venthayam) (approx 1 tsp)
few cumin seeds(jeeragam)(approx 1 tsp)
Approx 1-2.5 cups water(depends on the thickness)
Add all the above ingredients in the cooker and steam for 3-4 whistles can add small pieces of carrot or minced meat according to your taste.
Then after 3-4 whistles, mash all the ingredients together.
Then u have to add coconut milk (u can use coconut powder with water) approx 1 cup (depends on the thickness and consistency of thekanji) and boil thekanji.
Meanwhile in a frying pan, Fry little onion, little ginger garlic paste, curry leaves, little chilli powder, and little turmeric powder in 1 tablespoon ghee and saute it well. Add this sauted mixture to thekanjiand mix well and boil for 10 mts or more till thekanjiis done. You can add coriander leaves for garnishing and masala kanji is ready.
Note: Keep stirring occasionally.
